‘I’ve had this bike for about four months. I’m a minister in a church and it was another minister who gave me the bike. I used to cycle long ago but stopped for about 20 years. Now I’ve started again because I didn’t have a car, ha ha, and I have to get around. The bike showed me how very unfit I am – and it gave me a chance to remedy that. I am doing it bit by bit; I cycle a little further each time. There are quite a few ministers who cycle and some of my colleagues have even done the Cape Argus Pick n Pay cycle race, but I wouldn’t: I cycle for transport, not for madness! In traffic I’ve never felt very safe. I used to cycle in Pretoria, and even Cape Town’s taxi drivers are not as bad as Pretoria’s ordinary drivers.’
