'I'm originally from Springfotein. But I now live amongst the Sotho's. I ride my bike very often. It's my only form of transport and it helps me a lot. I love my bike and I don't lend it out - I the only one who rides it and I'm very proud of my bike. I've had this bike now for two years and I made it up myself from parts I collected. Cycling exercises my body and it keeps my body fit, and the bike helps me so that I don't have to pay so much in taxi fare. I was taught how to build up bicycles where I grew up, in Springfontein. It was a small town, like a farm almost, and I had lots of people who brought bikes to me to repair. Around here people steal bikes, but mine hasn't been stolen - wherever I go I lock it if I leave it. So I normally ride with my chain, but this morning I was just making a quick turn - I left the chain and lock. On my bike here on the top tube I have written Thys Markus Shebe - that's my name.’
